Barn style black door

The owner-designed Chartwell Barn is an aspirational self-build encapsulating elegance and contemporary living.

The client was keen for a seamless blend of the construction with the door and to match to the charred cladding as much as possible. So instead of a black painted RAL door which would have showed visible difference in the sheen of the finish with the cladding, he opted for a European oak hardwood door with an ebony oil coloured finish.

Oil is a sealing/protective finish but is also a fantastic option when a darker (or lighter) wood finish is sought without painting. It can be coloured to produce a stain that sinks into the wood and maintains the natural beauty of the grain and texture.

The large pivot front door is framed by aluminium glazing above and to the side and opens into a galleried hall with muted tones of concrete grey and black. It also features special letter etching and a concealed handle completing the story of a door – and house – of dreams.
