Save £24 - Book Now!I am self building a small house, which is currently delayed by about two months.
I applied to the council for a new address for the delivery of materials and goods, etc. The council has given me a letter confirming the approved address for the new house. So, when do I contact the valuation office to value it for council tax? I believe this process can take some time. The windows and doors won't be fitted for another month, so is it too early to contact them now?
Thank you
Hi Karen,
Thanks for your question. A similar query was raised a little while ago, and you can see the answer here: https://www.self-build.co.uk/question/new-build-house-address/
In short, council tax will be triggered once you’ve been issued with a completion certificate. You’ll need to apply for this towards the end of the works, and it can take about eight weeks for the certificate to be issued. You’ll first need building control approval, before you can be issued with a completion certificate – so if the windows haven’t yet been installed, then it will be too early for the council to tax you.
