Neither the government nor councils normally sell land specifically for self-building, although some councils do so occasionally. Generally speaking, the question of who is planning to build on a piece of land is not considered at the planning stage, and builders and developers want to obtain the greatest profi t from a site by building the houses themselves and selling them on. That said, from time to time a developer will occasionally set aside some plots on a new estate for self-builders. Besides that there are many ways to source plots and there are specialist books detailing them. The availability of land varies widely from area to area, but start by browsing the Plotsearch land listings in Build It (page 129) or online at www.buildstore.co.uk/findingland, and you will get a good idea of the sort of land on offer. The Build It/Sunday Times Building Your Own Home book (see page 57) has a detailed section on plot finding in which you should find some useful avenues to explore. That said, finding a plot is certainly something that needs to be made easier, which is precisely why Build It is championing the More Land Please campaign.
