Does render help damp on an old farmhouse

We have just purchase a old farmhouse, (it was repaired in 1878.) It’s solid stone built but has been rendered at some point. The render is cracked in some parts and my husband says that’s why there is damp within the house. But when I’ve looked at information on the web I’ve read render can cause damp as the house cannot breathe?

Can anyone help? I don’t really want to pay a fortune for new render and the damp is still there. Thanks
