We would like to convert our ground floor cloakroom into a shower room with a WC, wash basin and shower cubicle. There is easy access to an existing soil stack and water supply and we would like to employ a plumber on a labour-only basis. We have had two quotes so far, of £1,800 and £2,150. Are these reasonable?
Plumbers are in short supply these days so, unless you get lucky, you may well end up having to pay over the odds. Having said that, you should be able to hire a plumber for between £150 and £200 per day and the work you describe should take about five or six man days – which means you are being asked to pay more than £300 per workman per day. This does seem excessive, so unless you’re in a hurry to get the job done you should keep looking.
