SME Housebuilders Figures

7 August 2019

I’m doing some research into small-medium sized house-builders in the UK and was interested in the building of custom homes – like the ones built via the ‘Right to Build’ register.

I’m particularly interested in who it is that typically ends up doing the custom home new builds? Are 80% of these builds done by small-medium businesses, or is it predominantly larger volume builders? I know one of the intentions of all the legislation was to help SME housebuilders, but I’d be interested to know whether this is actually the case in reality.

If you have or know of any data on this it would be incredibly helpful, but otherwise I would be interested in your professional view. Otherwise, if you could point me in the direction of where I might be able to find this that would be much appreciated.

So far, it’s predominantly been SME developers – although a couple of the larger volume housebuilders are looking into the model, it doesn’t really work with their business processes.
I’m afraid that there is very little data, yet! We are beginning to collect it officially – but it’s very early stages.
I’m sorry I cannot offer more information, but if you’re approaching this from a developer’s standpoint you might consider joining NaCSBA custom build developer group or engage with the Right to Build Task Force?
