Which sewage system?

Recently purchased 3 derelict barns for conversion and have no idea as to the best sewage system to install! The primary barn will be 4 beds mainly 2 of us living there with further 3 bed and 2 bed barns to become holiday cottages.

Any and all advice very much appreciated.

I would always recommend sewage toilets of which there are many. Of course this decision depends upon how strong you feel about the eco system and the reuse of a fabulous commodity. I also suggest you read the free book ‘Humanure’…easily found on the internet or Wikipedia. Good luck whatever you choose.

If you are within 200m or so of mains drainage and gravity is on your side, then connect to that. If not, I’d install a treatment plant on site. It will need power, but will be almost as effective as mains drainage if set up and used correctly. You will need to confirm the porosity of surrounding ground by way of a percolation test and approval to discharge into a watercourse may be required. Get in touch with reputable suppliers, such as Kingspan Environmental, to look at the options and self-certify installations.

Many thanks Mike but unfortunately we are over 800 m from the nearest mains sewage supply so not an option.

Our preference is for a sewage treatment plant but am finding conflicting feedback/reports so wondered if there is are any that you would recommend? We are actually considering shipping a system in from France as we are likely to be ordering with our self build neighbour so may be cost effective.

Would be very grateful for your input.
