Can We Reuse Solar Panels?

Hello

We have plans to one day knock down our existing home and build a new eco home instead. However, this likely won't be for another five years or so. We are very keen to harness solar energy in our existing house and are considering adding solar panels. If we install these on the existing roof, can we then remove them to reuse on the new build? And would it be cost-effective or worthwhile?

It would be good to hear your thoughts.
Thanks

Good question and I can only give an approximate answer – and it all comes out pretty marginal.

Let’s say you install a 4kWp system and generate 800kWhpa per kWp, a total of 3,200kWhpa. Lets assume you use half of this and export the rest as a thoughtful contribution to the energy companies. Over 5 years your net saving would be 3200 x 0.5 x 5 x 28pence (current cap) = £2,240.

What would be the cost of decommissioning the system you have? Scaffolding, electrician, removal of inverter, making good the roof, etc – could easily amount to about £2,000. Then you have to reinstall – this could cost you a further £2K. Total cost £9K.

Alternatively, leave it where it is – net cost would be your original – say £5K, less £2K savings – so perhaps £3K. Would it increase the sale value of your house by £3K? Then shell out for a new system where you go. Total cost £8K – plus you get the uplift in house price – maybe.

Or do nothing – forego the saving of £2K in bills, install system at new place. Effective cost £7K but you miss out on the sale value uplift.

    All the best,
