Clad in natural cedar shingles and set within a rural landscape, this striking home has achieved full certification to the Passivhaus standard by the Passive House Institute (PHI) — a testament to its exceptional performance and carefully considered design.
Evolving from an initial sketch concept by architect Nic Pople, the project was expertly developed by Awen Design Director Mark Elton, who guided it through planning, technical design, and construction. In a remarkable achievement, the homeowner — a first-time self-builder — successfully oversaw the build, bringing the vision to life with confidence and determination.
At its core, the house is engineered for efficiency. An insulated raft foundation and twin-stud timber frame, supplied and constructed by MBC Timber, provide outstanding thermal performance. High-specification triple- and quadruple-glazed Internorm windows, complete with integral blinds, have been strategically positioned to carefully balance heat loss and solar gain, particularly along the predominantly west-facing façade.
Inside, the material palette is both refined and tactile. Polished concrete and oak industrial parquet flooring bring warmth and texture, while lime plaster walls enhance breathability and comfort. Microcement finishes in the wet areas and bespoke birch plywood joinery complete the interiors, creating calm, contemporary spaces that feel both functional and beautifully crafted.
This home is a perfect example of how high-performance building standards, thoughtful design, and natural materials can come together to create a sustainable, elegant, and deeply personal living environment
