Drain on resources

3 December 2012

We have been offered a plot that is ideal for our purposes, but there is a drawback in that the property would be 300m away from mains drainage. The pipe would be laid across our land, but how much would it cost to lay? Would it be cheaper to install a septic tank?

Answers

It should cost about £8,000 to install a septic tank. A trench for a 100mm drain including excavation, bedding and surrounding should cost about £40 per linear metre, adding up to £12,000 in your case. So the septic is cheaper – but bear in mind that a house connected to a main drainage system is easier to sell than one with a septic tank
