How do I hang internal doors?

I want to install new doors inside my home. Can you give me any tips on how to hang them properly?

Obviously the first thing you need to do is source the right door. If possible, purchase one that’s the same size as the original opening, or alternatively look at solid wood versions that can be cut to fit.

Flush doors will contain wooden blocks for fitting hinges and locks and their positions will be marked on the edge of the unit. When installing, note where the indication mark is, as this will determine which way round the door should be placed in the frame.

Once the door is the right size (you may need to plane some wood away from the bottom to allow for carpet), you need to measure out where the hinges will go. Hold the door in the frame (you may need someone to help you) and mark the hinge positions. If the hinge recesses in the frame are already cut to size, then you can screw the flaps into them. If not, you will need to cut an indentation into the timber by marking around the hinge chiseling to the required depth.

Next, you’re ready to screw the hinges to the frame. Hold the door up and put in one screw each. The head should lie flush with the surface of the hinge flap – if it protrudes, the door won’t close properly. Check that the it swings open and shuts easily. If it does, insert the remaining screws and tighten. If it doesn’t you may need to adjust the hinge positions slightly.
