On the high side

We have two quotations for our new 167m² (1,800ft²) house. The lower one is £240,000 but the other is much higher. What’s reasonable?

Assuming that the quote includes £10,000 for drains, paths, fencing and the like, the price for the house itself is £230,000 which equates to £1,377 per m² (£128 per ft²). Unless you are building to a top-class specifi cation, this is very high. For a standard specification you should pay about £807 per m² (£75 per ft²) so you must decide whether to accept the quote, negotiate it downwards or go out to tender again.
