Sash security

3 December 2012

The bedroom of the ground-floor flat I am renovating has sash windows facing the street. I want to retain the windows’ authenticity and would also like to leave them open from time to time when I’m not in the room. However, I am concerned that the room is easily accessible to intruders. Are there any special locks that would allow me to leave the windows slightly open while still being secure? And are there any stronger types of glass I could use to replace the existing panes?

Safety glass or laminated glass make it more challenging for someone to break the window. You can get sash stops from most large DIY stores that will enable you to leave sash windows slightly open while locked – it’s best to fit a pair to each window. Or look in Yellow Pages for local specialist security shops that would be able to advise on the products. The government’s crime prevention website (www.crimereduction.gov.uk) has advice on the standard for replacement windows, while the Metropolitan Police’s site (www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention), offers useful information on the different types of window locks available.
