Retrofitting traditional stone or brick buildings demands a careful balance between improving thermal performance and preserving the building’s original fabric. Many older structures struggle to meet modern insulation standards without compromising breathability or effective moisture management. The Retro EcoWall system provides a thoughtful and sustainable solution to this challenge.

Introduced at the RIAI Architecture & Building Expo 2022, Retro EcoWall combines innovative materials to form a high-performance internal insulation system that works in harmony with traditional construction. At its core is Diasen Diathonite Thermactive.037 cork-lime thermal plaster, paired with Gutex Thermoroom wood fibre insulation boards. Internally, Lime Green Solo finishing plaster and breathable natural paints from Auro complete the system.

Together, these materials deliver more than just insulation. The system is airtight yet vapour permeable, allowing moisture to move safely through the wall structure. This significantly reduces the risk of condensation and mould—common issues when traditional buildings are treated with impermeable, synthetic materials.
