Welsh Oak Frame Adams

When Jamie Adams and his wife Madeline finally got planning permission to build their new home, they knew they wanted to incorporate oak but budget constraints meant they couldn’t build the whole property in oak. They had a masonry build in mind with oak cladding details and an eye-catching oak frame extension for their kitchen-diner.

The couple engaged a building contractor and project manager. While the project manager took on the technical elements of the build, Jamie focused on buying materials and sourcing the oak frame supplier. At one of the self-build exhibitions, he spoke to a number of oak frame companies, but there was little interest for such a relatively small project.

‘By contrast, Welsh Oak Frame was very enthusiastic and proactive from the outset, plus their attention to detail with the oak surpassed their competitors,’ he says. ‘It was important we work with a company who was as excited about our project as we were and happy to work with our drawings.’

Welsh Oak Frame created a two-bay design for the 30sqm extension. ‘They came up with a fantastic idea,’ adds Jamie. ‘Instead of using a normal brace, they incorporated a sling brace in the central span, which gives a greater sense of height and creates the wow factor that visitors comment on when they come inside. The icing on the cake was the beautiful oak mantel beam. I’d asked if they had some spare oak and they made one for us – they really went the extra mile and we appreciated that.’

‘The oak frame extension is a stunning, bright, tactile space and I never get bored of running my hand along the timbers, the chamfering is beautiful. The whole extension is a thing of beauty, it’s the focal point that lights up everyone’s eyes when they come inside.’
