How can we dress a feature window?

15 August 2014

We are building a new contemporary-style home and we have a feature window measuring approx 2ft by 15ft.

I am unsure how to decorate the window without making it look fussy. The window has plain glass and the staircase can be seen through it. I would like some advice such as lighting or decor.

What an amazing feature window and it is only right to do it justice with a stunning arrangement to draw the eye towards it, through your house to the stairs and beyond.

With these measurements, it’s best to highlight the striking proportions of the window and I would go with a single ‘Family Arrangement’. This is a group of 3 objects are used – staggering down in size, big, medium and small and snuggled together in the centre of the window sill – creating a single focus. Selecting the big object is key for this window and you need to think tall to fill some of that 15 feet scale so that it doesn’t feel lost. Then scale your medium and small objects to step down in size. This will achieve a look that’s unfussy with a co-ordinated theme. Choose either objects of the same colour or the same type of object.

As this is a window and you don’t want to clutter the view through to the stairs I suggest using coloured glass vases as the light coming through them will be stunning and will create a stain glass window effect from both sides. You can find some fantastic large glass pieces at Homesense and antique fairs.

Regarding the lights, if you are just installing the window, put three tight beam recessed downlights at the top so that the light will be directed right into your display. Stay away from table lamps perched here as the cord leading to the window will look messy.
