Rainclear

Graven Hill is the UK’s largest self-build scheme. For Build It it was the ideal location for the Education House, backing onto Grand Designs: The Street.

The samples we supplied helped with understanding how the window frames (in Grey Yellow RAL 7034), cladding, render, and roof tiles could work together to change the character of the house.

“Rainwater goods are often one of those decisions that get overlooked during the early design phases but have a major visual impact on the finished home,” says Chris Batesmith, the editor of BuildIt magazine at the time, and project manager for this build.

Build It settled on plain galvanised steel for a maintenance-free solution at an affordable price point and we helped ensure the right products were ordered in the right quantities.

“The bonded zinc coating means it will never fade or peel off. And it came within a whisker price-wise of an equivalent PVCu set up,” says Chris.

One thing they knew was they wanted to steer clear of plastic gutters! “The cheaper stuff has a habit of expanding and contracting due to thermal movement, which can be noisy and will ultimately lead to it falling apart,” says Chris.

It just didn’t offer the kind of life span they wanted.

Infinity galvanised steel offered durability, minimal maintenance and an attractive aesthetic. One of our local specialist installer customers took care of the installation.

Installation was straightforward, as steel is lightweight, easy to handle, and uses rubber-lined connections for water-tightness so requires no messy silicone.
