Alan Burton had always dreamed of building his own home and after years of looking unsuccessfully for a new property, he persuaded his wife Nicola they should take the plunge.

As luck would have it, their neighbours at the time were experienced self builders and had a plot of land for sale, which the Burtons bought. They chose Potton as their build partner, drawing inspiration from the five show homes at our Show Centre in St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

Alan also took part in courses at Potton’s Self Build Academy to learn as much about the build process as possible. He had decided to manage the build himself so he found the workshops extremely helpful.

The Burtons worked with our self build consultants to finalise the architectural drawings and apply for planning. They decided to go with Kingspan ULTIMA for their house, partly because of its excellent energy efficiency.

Once the timber frame arrived on site, it was quickly erected and in just a few weeks, the roof was on and the interior was beginning to take shape.

“The quality of a Potton home is very good and the builders enjoyed working with the product as there weren’t any issues,” says Alan. “The design worked out great, and the service from the self build consultant was extremely helpful.”

The couple chose brick and render for the elevation, then inside, opted for an open-plan kitchen and dining room with white gloss minimalist units and bifold doors to the extensive garden beyond.

Their beautiful home extends over three floors and has five bedrooms. A detached double garage is situated alongside and solar panels on the roof of the garage supply all the house’s electricity needs.

After waiting so long before self building, they watched their dream home become a reality and they couldn’t be happier.
