Can I insure my caravan while I live on site?

10 March 2014

We are currently living in a caravan while I carry out the renovations on our newly purchased house (complete rebuild). However I am struggling to find an insurance company that will cover the caravan.

The firms I have spoken to so far (the regular companies) are unwilling to provide insurance as the caravan is not located at a recognised site. Can you recommend someone that may be able to help? Many thanks.

It’s not unusual for someone carrying out a renovation or new build project to live in a caravan positioned on the site.

Despite the problems you’ve encountered, insuring them is usually pretty straightforward. You need to get something called ‘Site Insurance’, which not only covers the project during the course of construction but can often include the caravan and contents as well.

Please bear in mind that if you are relying on ‘home insurance’ whilst you carry out a knock down and rebuild (or even a renovation project), you are unlikely to have any form of cover at all. This is because most home insurance policies exclude properties undergoing reconstruction, renovation or alteration.

For some expert advice contact one of the specialist site insurance providers, such as Buildstore or my company Self-Build Zone.
