Ke-design’s second project on Wenlock Road in Shrewsbury involved a bold transformation of a 1970s home with a restrictive and outdated floor plan. Originally, the layout featured a tight hallway leading to a lounge with an integrated staircase, a hallmark of its era. The garage, converted into a dining room, was balanced by a new garage on the opposite side, but neither improved the flow. Access to the garden was limited by a basic conservatory, and while the house had four bedrooms, two of them suffered from low ceilings, making them impractical.
The client, however, had a vision to modernize the home without losing its character. Recognizing the need to maintain the ‘asymmetrical’ front elevation to gain planning approval, Ke-design devised a solution that would meet both practical and aesthetic goals. The remodel introduced a stunning double-height entrance with a feature window and cantilevered staircase, opening into an expansive ground-floor layout with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. The kitchen now connects to a large utility room and pantry, greatly enhancing functionality.
Upstairs, a galley landing overlooks the grand entrance, leading to four spacious double bedrooms, two with en-suites, and a family bathroom. This transformation not only addressed the home’s structural limitations but also enhanced its visual appeal.
The project’s thoughtful design and skillful execution earned it a shortlist position in the 2022 Build It magazine Awards for ‘Best Architect or Design for a Renovation or Conversion Project.’
