Roger and Helen, seasoned farmers with over 40 years on their Shropshire farm, were close to obtaining planning permission for a “local needs dwelling” when they approached Ke-design. Originally, the couple had enlisted a planning consultant for the design and permission phase, intending to work with Ke-design for the Building Regulation drawings. However, Helen felt some adjustments were needed to create their ideal rural bungalow, leading to a collaboration with Ke-design that ultimately transformed the entire layout.
Drawing inspiration from a nearby Ke-design project, the couple decided on a redesign, crafting a more fitting, personalized home. A standout feature, the oak-framed veranda, provides a sheltered outdoor space where Roger and Helen can relax and enjoy their farm’s scenic views year-round.
Working closely with Jones Brothers, local contractors, Helen became deeply involved in the building process. Although they had never envisioned themselves as self builders, Roger and Helen embraced the project, creating a home they now cherish.
Their new build, completed under budget at £250,000, didn’t just meet their needs—it won them recognition. In 2021, Ke-design entered the home in the “Build It” Magazine Awards, where it was named Best Self Build for Under £250K and has since been featured in the magazine.
