Hi

We are in for planning and are getting three quotes from timber frame manufacturers. Can any one please advise on how to make a fair comparison, questions to ask as well as any articles that are relevant in any of the self build mags. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Hi Tony,

As a starting point, you’ll want to ascertain if the quotes you’re receiving are fixed-price or liable to change in the future. You should also establish what each quote covers – is it materials only or does the figure include erection too? Are any project management services included? You may find that this article on the pros and cons of timber frame offers some helpful pricing and specification tips, or if you’re considering a package route for your home, you can find cost information for this type of project here.

I’d also suggest using a free estimation tool like the Build It Self Build Cost Calculator. This can give you an approximate total cost for the works, which you can then compare to the quotes you receive to ensure they’re realistic.

Alternatively, if you require a more thorough breakdown, the Build It Estimating Service can offer a tailored financial report of your project costs, including live materials and labour costs.

Best of luck with your project!
