New Housing Minister, Mark Prisk, has spelled out the importance of the self-build sector at the Council of Mortgage Lenders’ annual conference.

Prisk highlighted the crucial role that lenders can plan in opening up the mortgage market. Speaking on his blog soon after, Prisk reiterated the government’s view that, in order for the housing market to recover effectively, “those who dream of buying or building a home must be able to access an affordable mortgage, and know that they can access it.”

The launch of government-backed initiatives, such as council-led land release schemes and the £30million Custom Build Investment fund for budding self-builders, has helped to raise the profile of self-build across the nation. In fact, a recent survey by the Building Societies Assocation revealed that 53% of UK householders would like to build their own home.

Around 25 self-build mortgage products are currently available through leading self-build mortgage broker, BuildStore.
