When Joe Roberts moved into his 1980s detached home in Worcestershire, the existing gas-fired boiler system was clearly outdated. Rather than replacing it like for like, Joe chose to future-proof the property by installing a highly efficient Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) paired with the Unico 1218 SDHV Heating, Cooling & Ventilation system—a decision that went on to win Build It 2025 Best Heating Renovation.

The 85 square metre home already benefited from strong thermal performance, including double glazing, cavity wall insulation and 200mm of loft insulation. This allowed detailed heat loss surveys to be undertaken, ensuring accurate system sizing and optimal efficiency. Leveraging his professional expertise at Bell Plumbing Supplies, Joe selected a Worcester Bosch ASHP with weather compensation, which automatically adjusts output based on external temperatures and integrates seamlessly with the Unico 1218 SDHV system.

The compact Unico 1218 SDHV air handling unit was discreetly installed in the loft, delivering heating, cooling and ventilation through small-diameter, fully insulated flexible ducting. Thirteen subtle, ceiling-mounted outlets distribute conditioned air evenly across both floors, maintaining consistent temperatures within ±1°C, with no drafts, hot spots or intrusive noise. The ability to remove radiators also freed up wall space, enhancing interior design flexibility.

As a true three-in-one solution, the Unico 1218 SDHV system provides year-round comfort while improving indoor air quality and reducing humidity and condensation. Operating at efficiencies of up to 350% when paired with the ASHP, the system demonstrates how a standard 1980s home can be transformed into a low-carbon, high-performance living space—without extensive building alterations.
