Frustrated by their efforts to find a house that ticked all the right boxes, Darren Findlow and Anthony Higham turned to self build.
They were particularly struck by Carpenter Oak’s more contemporary designs and soon set about comissioning an architect to fulfill their vision for a newly aquired wooded plot.
The couple wanted to include as much glazing as possible to make the most of the setting, evidenced by the glazed gable that fronts the master bedroom and lounge below.
A combination of oak frame and structural insulated panels (SIPs) provided a quick assembly and good thermal performance. Blue engineering bricks, white render and oak cladding form the exterior.
“Seeing the build evolve as we’d imagined was great,” says Darren. “Having the opportunity to do things properly was a real bonus as the properties we’ve lived in previously always seemed to have been botched in some way. We’ve not cut corners and have done everything to the best of our ability, using the best materials we could afford.”
