Cloud Lodge: Oil to Air Source Heat Pump Renovation

Cloud Lodge near Ashbourne underwent a major transformation from an older bungalow into a substantial modern home, with extensive alterations and the addition of an entirely new first floor.

As part of the renovation, the home’s original oil-fired heating system was replaced with a renewable heating system designed and installed by IMS Heat Pumps.

With the significantly increased floor area and heating requirement, we specified two Samsung EHS Mono R290 16kW air source heat pumps, alongside a 300-litre hot water cylinder and 50-litre buffer cylinder.

The renovation also provided the opportunity to rethink how heat was distributed around the property. The existing ground-floor radiators were removed and replaced with underfloor heating throughout, allowing the heating system to be designed around the lower flow temperatures associated with heat pump technology.

The wider renovation completely changed the scale and character of the property, adding a new first floor incorporating a master suite, cinema room and dramatic glazed viewing gallery. Solar PV and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) were also incorporated into the project.

For major renovations like this, considering the heating system as part of the wider building design allows heat loss, heat emitters, hot water demand and plant requirements to be assessed together rather than treating the heat pump as a simple replacement for the existing boiler.
