When Adele decided to replace the oil heating system at her home near Ashbourne, she wanted a more efficient, lower-carbon alternative that would work with the property’s existing mix of underfloor heating and radiators.

Following a detailed heat-loss assessment and system design, we specified a 15.5kW Grant Aerona air source heat pump, together with a 250-litre twin-coil hot water cylinder and 40-litre buffer vessel.

The property has underfloor heating alongside radiators, demonstrating that a heat pump doesn’t require one particular type of heat emitter. The important factor is designing the whole system around the heat requirements of the individual property.

The system was designed to operate at a 50°C flow temperature, with a predicted SCOP of 3.60, meaning the heat pump is expected to produce around 3.6 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed over the course of a typical year.

Replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump can be particularly attractive for properties that aren’t connected to the gas grid. However, every home is different, so careful heat-loss calculations, appropriate heat-pump sizing and an assessment of the existing heating system are essential before deciding on the right solution.

We designed and installed the complete system, giving Adele a renewable alternative to her previous oil heating and a heating system designed specifically around her home.
