As part of a major home renovation in Oban, Argyllshire, we were brought in to design and install a complete renewable heating and energy system, combining an air source heat pump with solar PV and battery storage.
For the heating system, we specified a 12kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump, designed to meet 100% of the property’s space heating and domestic hot water demand at the MCS design temperature. The installation also included a 250-litre hot water cylinder, 40-litre buffer/volumiser, antifreeze valves and internet-connected controls.
Alongside the heat pump, we designed a 9.345kWp solar PV system using 21 x 445W JA Solar panels, paired with a Tesla Powerwall 3 and Tesla Gateway.
The roof presented an interesting design challenge, with several roof windows to work around. The panel layout was carefully designed to make effective use of the available south-facing roof area while accommodating the existing roof features.
Combining a heat pump, solar PV and battery storage allows the different technologies to work as part of one wider home-energy strategy. Solar-generated electricity can be used within the home, including by the heat pump, while surplus generation can be stored in the battery for use later.
We designed, supplied, installed and commissioned both systems, giving the homeowner one team responsible for the heating, solar and battery elements of their renovation.
