Architects Ian and Thea McMillan wanted their new home, on a brownfield infill plot in Edinburgh’s Portobello, to have an inclusive feel to it while simultaneously meeting the needs of their family.
The couple have created a pioneering barrier-free and wheelchair-friendly home without resorting to a lift, which would have created an immediate inequality for daughter, Greta, who has cerebral palsy.
Instead their cleverly-designed home circulates around a maple-decked ramp, which takes up almost a third of the floorspace and provides access throughout the home for the entire family.
